"Fridays For Future"

Something I've noticed a lot more on social media is the topic of Greta Thunberg and her involvement in the issue of climate change. Greta is a 16-year-old Swedish environmental activist on climate change whose campaigning has gained international recognition.  It started back in 2018 when Greta would skip school every Friday and stand outside the Swedish Parliament holding a sign that said "School strike for climate" (in Swedish). Soon after, other students from schools got involved and thus because the school climate strike movement called Fridays For Future. A freelance photographer posted photos on Instagram and Facebook of the movement which resulted in gaining worldwide recognition. Greta has appeared on the cover of Time magazine naming her the "next generation leader," and many see her as a role model.

Recently Greta went on a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean from Plymouth, UK, to New York in a racing yacht equipped with solar panels and underwater turbines. The transatlantic crossing was to prove carbon-neutral transportation is possible, and to further Greta's important stance on reducing emissions. You can find pictures of Greta's voyage on her Instagram page.

Social media plays a huge role in Greta's success at raising awareness about her cause. I don't think she would be where she is today without the recognition of the online community. After learning about Greta I followed her on Twitter and Instagram, and also started following GreenPeace. GreenPeace is an independent organization dedicated to protecting the environment. If you don't have the means of donating or joining a strike, the least you can do is make yourself and others aware.
