Polar Paws
Being a college student can be overwhelming, and stressful at times. I can think of days when I've walked out of a classroom and felt completely lost, and down on my luck. However, there is one thing that cheers me up the moment I see it. The therapy dogs in training with their trainers is a sight that always puts a smile on my face. I see them around campus here at Ohio Northern University almost every day getting treats, and learning how to be good dogs. Both students and staff are able to be trainers for these dogs and the organization here on campus is called Polar Paws. Polar Paws is teamed up with 4 Paws for Ability to bring the fostering program to the Ohio Northern University Campus. The 4 Paws' mission is to improve the lives of children with disabilities. To do this, the members of Polar Paws foster, and socialize 4 Paws for Ability dogs, and aims to educate the community on the role of a service dog.
Now to the important question, can you pet the service dogs in training? The answer is yes, they encourage students to interact with the dogs. Of course it is up to the discretion of the handler. Sometimes dogs are working on distractions and the petting can disrupt. Always ask first but 95% of the time their answer is yes. I myself haven't attempted to pet the dogs, because I wasn't aware that it was encouraged after asking permission. Now I will for sure ask, and give these good boys/girls the pets they deserve.
