"Social Media for Strategic Communication" Ch. 3
In this chapter we learn all about personal brands on social media. For me, a personal brand is something important to establish, because it will be how the online community views you as a whole. Your brand will be your personality, and be what is unique and memorable about you. Personality focuses on how an individual behaves, acts, responds, and communicates with other people in their respective communities. I think one of the more important questions to ask yourself when thinking about personal brands is, "What attributes would you use to describe yourself?" Are you trendy, or are you classic? Do you believe in wholesome, family-friendly content, or are you edgy, and say whatever comes to mind to generate a reaction?
Someone who I find to have an interesting mix of a personal brand is Ricky Gervais. He is clear on his stance on fighting for animal rights, and sharing things to bring awareness to his followers. He shares hard-hitting realities of the cruelties going on around the world, and retweets groups advocating animal rights. However, his vulgar language, and crude sense of humor doesn't quite make him family-friendly. He is a combination of positive, and negative in the most interesting way.
Establishing a personal brand takes a lot of thinking, and understanding who you are as a person. There are many questions you can ask yourself, but one good question is, "Who are you right now, and where do you want to be?" When I think about who I am right now as an online persona, I would have to say I'm a mixture of selective, and altruist. I share things that are relevant, and avoid posting in the heat of the moment to avoid unnecessary attention. Also, I believe in posting wholesome content and I hold value in my relationships. When I think of where I want to be with my online persona, I would like to keep constant with this in the future.
