"Social Media for Strategic Communication" Ch. 4
Posting to your social media is almost a mindless tick these days, anyone can do it, anywhere at any time, with ease. Some days, you might even think you could make a career out of posting on social media. You wouldn't be wrong, having a career in social media is very attainable with the right know how, and time management. It also helps to have an educational background in marketing, communications, or journalism. Schools even offer a minor in social media, which always looks good on a resume.
Where to work in social media is an important question to ask yourself when considering a career in it. In social media, no one designated position, brand role, or industry is universally the same. Each company, or individual you work for is going to expect something different from you. Expectations like, distinct titles, and specific duties assigned to certain individuals. You will have to make sure you understand the tone of the specific company, or individual you work for. Making sure you are on-brand, and not going rogue is important. Some different job titles companies will look for are: social media coordinator, social media strategist, content creator, multimedia/video producer, and writer/editor.
With social media constantly evolving, the roles and job titles are fluid as well. Make sure you are in an environment where you can do your best work and have the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to the greater good for your clients. The industry is still relatively new, but it has become more main-stream and established. Social media roles will continue to change, some may become obsolete, and new ones will be created.
